Use this BMR & EER Calculator to understand how many calories you should consume to maintain your current weight or to lose weight.  It uses formulas to estimate the calories you use in a resting state and then applies the EER (estimated energy requirements based on the amount of physical activity you engage in daily) factor to the equation.
This calculator is a guide. These calculators will over estimate your calories if you are morbidly obese ( 100 lbs. or more overweight) or are very sedentary and can under estimate them if you are a super active person such as an Olympic athlete or professional cycler, in such a case consult with a certified nutritional consultant to do an actual caloric  determination
